History of the Iconic Toyota Supra

The Toyota Supra is perhaps one of Japan’s most iconic vehicles. It is almost certainly the most iconic sports car Toyota has ever produced and is loved by car enthusiasts the world over. The Supra name dates back 40 years, and with the release of the fifth generation, this name will continue into the future.

Toyota drew inspiration for the Supra from its own 2000GT sports car with an end 19 inline 6-cylinder layout60s. The first three generations of the Supra came with an engine that was a direct descendant of the M engine from the 2000GT.

The

2000GT is considered a classic among the Gran Turismos of the 1960s. It was inspired by the Jaguar E-Type and showed the world that Japanese car manufacturers can build better cars too.

Toyota Celica XX / Supra (1978-1981)

Toyota originally introduced the Supra name in April 1978. It was a new designation for a wider, longer and more powerful version of the second generation Toyota Celica. The car was designed to compete with the hugely popular Datsun Z and was known domestically as the Celica XX.

What really set the new Supra apart from the standard Celica was the engine. 2.6-liter inline-6 Supra engine with 110 hp was the company’s first production engine to feature electronic fuel injection. For the domestic Japanese market, the Supra was equipped with a smaller 2. 0-liter engine producing 123 hp. The smaller engine was installed in such a way that Japanese buyers would not have to pay additional tax under the country’s vehicle size and volume regulations.

Toyota offered the Supra with either a 5-speed manual (W50) or 4-speed automatic (A40D). The car also featured four-wheel disc brakes and a four-link coil-spring rear suspension. In front of the car there were MacPherson struts and an anti-roll bar.

On January 1, 1979, the Supra was officially introduced to the US market as a 2.6-litre model. It had a base price of $10,118 and was initially seen as a premium model in the Celica line. The Supra was the first Toyota vehicle with cruise control in the US and other features such as air conditioning, power steering, sunroof, optional leather, and an AM/FM stereo.

In August 1980, the Celica Supra received its first major upgrade in the form of an increase in displacement. The engine displacement was now 2.8 liters, and the power was increased to 116 hp. and 196 Nm. It could accelerate to 100 km / h in just 10 seconds, and cover a quarter mile in 17.5 seconds.

In addition, Toyota offered a new sport performance package to complement the upgrades. This package included a new sport suspension, bulging tires with white lettering, and front and rear spoilers.

In the Japanese market, the Celica XX 2800GT was equipped with the most powerful engine in the range: a 2.8-liter six-cylinder engine with 172 hp. In 1981, the Celica XX introduced the world’s first navigation computer.

Second Generation Toyota Celica Supra A60 (1981-1986)

The next Toyota Supra came in the form of the Mk2 Celica XX, which was launched in July 1981. It was based on the new third-generation Celica sports platform. This new car model was sportsmanship oriented and was sold as the Celica Supra in all export markets, but as the Celica XX in Japan.

Once again, the Supra retains the looks of the standard Celica, but with a few differences. The Supra retained the inline 6-cylinder engine, while the standard Celica made do with the inline 4-cylinder engine. The car also had a longer wheelbase and a redesigned front end. Retractable headlights were fitted and the wheel arches flared aggressively.

European markets saw the Supra for the first time in August 1982, and the car enjoyed additional exclusivity in the UK as it was limited to 100 cars per month.

The Celica Supra was offered in several variants in the North American market. Buyers could choose between «luxury type» (L-type) or «performance type» (P-type). Both the L-Type and P-Type were mechanically identical, with differences limited to wider wheels and tires, fiberglass flares over the wheels on the P-Type, and sportier interiors.

The new Toyota Supra was equipped with a 2.8-liter inline-six engine (5M-GE) with 145 hp. and 210 Nm of torque in the North American market. When the car started, it could accelerate to 0-60 mph in about 9.8 seconds and could cover the quarter mile in 17. 2 seconds.

Once again, the Japanese market received a version of the car with a smaller engine. Customers could choose a 2 liter version, which was not available in other markets. The 2.0L M-TEU turbo engine produced the same power as the 1982 2.8L but limited to the automatic transmission. If you wanted a manual transmission version, a 2.0-liter 1G-GEU with up to 160 hp was offered.

Toyota paired the updated engine with the W58 5-speed manual or A43DL 4-speed automatic as an option on the L-Type. The Celica Supra featured four-wheel independent suspension, specially tuned by Lotus. The car was equipped with rack and pinion steering with adjustable power steering and semi-independent wishbone rear suspension with coil springs. In addition, the Celica Supra was equipped with four-wheel disc brakes.

Engine power has steadily increased throughout the generation, reaching a maximum output of 178 hp. and 287 Nm for models sold in the UK and New Zealand. The Celica Supra for the North American market developed a maximum output of 161 hp, about the same as the Japanese version of the car.

Early racing success

Compared to the first generation Supra, the second generation Supra has a more eventful racing career on the track. In the British Saloon Championship (the forerunner of the BTCC), driver Wyn Percy successfully raced Celica and Corolla. His next step was to switch to a Celica Supra at 1983 year.

In a Celica Supra, Percy won the ninth round of the 1984 series, beating Andy Rose’s 3.5-litre Rover. Barry Sheen took control of Percy’s Celica Supra for the 1985 season. That same year, Per Eklund won the Group A championship at the Ulster Rally in his Celica Supra.

Third generation Toyota Supra A70 (1986-1993)

Due to production delays, the third generation Toyota Supra was launched in 1986. The links between the Celica and Supra were severed as they were now two completely different models. Toyota blazed a new trail with the Celica, making it front-wheel drive, while the Supra retained a rear-wheel drive layout. The Supra was launched in America for $18,610 compared to 14 09$8 for a previous generation car.

Toyota upgraded the engine to a more powerful 3.0-liter inline-six engine with about 200 hp. Initially, the car was only available with a naturally aspirated engine, but in 1987 a turbocharged version was added to the lineup. This turbocharged model produced approximately 230 hp. and 325 Nm.

Like previous Supra models, 2.0-litre versions of the car were also introduced to the Japanese market. The 2.0-litre version of the Supra was slightly narrower on the outside to meet Japanese government sizing requirements. This meant that Japanese buyers did not pay taxes for driving a larger car.

Go To

The turbocharged Toyota 7M-GE and 7M-GTE were the flagships of the Toyota engine line. They had four valves per cylinder along with dual overhead cams, and the turbocharged version was the first non-distributor Toyota engine offered in the United States.

Unfortunately, due to an error in the factory head bolt torque specifications, almost all of these engines had severe blown gasket problems. The incorrect torque characteristics were thought to be due to Toyota’s switch from asbestos cylinder head gaskets to copper. Although the problem was severe, it could be easily fixed by replacing the head gasket and tightening the head bolts to 100Nm of torque. Apart from this problem, the engines were incredibly reliable.

Toyota carried over the 5-speed W58 transmission from the previous generation, however the turbocharged version was offered with the more reliable R154 manual transmission. Buyers could also choose the A340E 4-speed automatic transmission for both turbocharged and naturally aspirated models.

The new third generation Supra also features more technology than ever before. When it was launched in 1986, there were options with 3-channel ABS and TEMS (Toyota Electronic Modulated Suspension). The 7M-GE engine also featured a new Acoustic Control Induction System (ACIS) that controlled air compression pulses in the intake manifold to increase power.

Later in the generation life cycle, Toyota introduced the 276 hp 2. 5-litre 1JZ-GTE twin-turbocharged engine. and a torque of 363 Nm. This was offered with the same transmission options as previous versions of the car and the car was designated the JZA70.

In addition to the JZA70 released in 1990, Toyota also released the JZA70-R. This 1JZ-GTE car was also known as the 2.5 Twin Turbo R and featured additional improvements such as lighter anti-roll bars, larger intercooler, Bilstein sports suspension, Torsen differential, Recaro seats, MOMO steering wheel and shift knob, as well as gray interior.

Supra Turbo A in motorsport

Toyota produced the 500 Supra with special homologation for the Japan Touring Car Championship (JTCC). The Turbo A was only available in Japan and was produced from September 1988 to October 1988.

The vehicle had minor mechanical and cosmetic differences compared to the standard vehicle. It featured a standard CT-26 turbocharger with a slightly larger inductor. In addition, the Turbo A was fitted with thicker roll bars, ventilated disc brakes, and additional cooling ducts at the front of the car. 9The 0003

Turbo A has had varying degrees of success in various areas of motorsport, from rally racing to endurance racing. However, the car did not win as many races as the JTCC had hoped, despite being designed to do so. This was due to the fact that it was underdeveloped and was placed in the higher tier divisions due to its 3.0 liter engine. Basically, the car was too heavy for the lower tier classes and not powerful enough compared to competitors in the higher tier classes.

Fourth Generation Toyota Supra A80 (1993-2002)

The Japanese automotive industry enjoyed a period of incredible success from the 1980s to the 1990s. During this period, Japanese manufacturers developed the world’s finest cars, which became some of the most loved cars of all time. Among them were Mazda RX-7 FD, Honda NSX, Nissan GT-R R34 and R33 and, of course, Toyota Supra Mk4.

Toyota continued to produce the Mk3 Supra until 1992, when it was confident it could deliver a vehicle that could match and surpass the current crop of sports cars. The iconic heart of the Supra A80 began with the introduction of the 2.5-litre JZ twin-turbo engine in the Mk3. This engine would become one of the Japanese manufacturer’s most famous and beloved powertrains.

The highly anticipated Mk4 Supra was unveiled at the Chicago Auto Show in 1993 and it was a bold new direction for the company. The coupe was developed over four years under the direction of chief engineer Isao Tsuzuki, who also worked on the MR2 and the first Celica.

Toyota’s new Supra had a sleeker design that had more in common with the 2000GT of the sixties than its predecessor. The car radiated performance with a low, long hood and an optional tall spoiler.

Starting at $34,225, the Mk4 Supra commanded a higher price tag due to supercar looks and performance. Compared to the previous model, the Mk4 Supra is lower, wider and shorter, but 100 kg lighter.

Toyota engineers achieved this weight savings thanks to the aluminum used for the hood, targa top (optional), oil pan, transmission pan, various suspension components and front cross member. In addition, magnesium was used on the steering wheel and the gas tank was made of plastic. Toyota was so focused on cutting weight that they even used hollow carpet fibers to save a few grams.

A lighter design was associated with a more simplified engine range: the 3.0-litre JZ-series supercharged or twin-turbocharged inline-six. In the naturally aspirated version, the car put out 220 hp, but the real star of the show was the turbocharged model, which put out around 320 hp.

In terms of performance, the Mk4 Supra is a big improvement over its predecessor. Now he could accelerate to 0-100 km per hour in just 4.6 seconds and reach speeds of more than 277 km/h. However, the car’s speed was limited to just 180 km/h in Japan for safety reasons and 250 km/h in other countries.

The twin turbochargers in the Supra ran in series rather than in parallel. Toyota directed all of the exhaust gases through the first turbine to reduce lag, which increased torque by as early as 1800 rpm. The exhaust gases are then directed through a second turbine at 3500 rpm for «pre-boost» mode, however none of the exhaust gases are used to power the engine. At 4000 rpm, the second turbine fires properly to boost the first turbine.

For the fourth generation Supra, Toyota decided to develop a new six-speed Getrag/Toyota V160 gearbox, which was used exclusively on turbocharged models, while the naturally aspirated car had to be content with the W58 five-speed manual gearbox. Both turbo and naturally aspirated models were offered with a four-speed automatic transmission with manual shift mode.

Mk4 Supra in motorsport

While rear-wheel drive and front-engined never changed, the Mk4 Supra was by far the most successful in motorsport. 9The 0003

Mk4 Supra competed in the iconic 24 Hours of Le Mans, Swiss Mountain Races, Pikes Peak Races, American SCCA Races for two consecutive years and achieved incredible success in the Japanese JGTC Championship from 1995 to 2003.

By the end of the nineties, sales of sports cars such as the Supra in the North American market had plummeted. Toyota withdrew the Supra from the Canadian market in 1996 and in 1998 in the US. The Supra lasted in Japan until 2002, when it was discontinued due to new restrictive emission control measures.

Return of the Toyota Supra (J29/DB)

For many years, the return of the Supra was just a wishful event, and there were many rumors about a new car. However, a glimmer of hope was lit when Toyota unveiled the FT-1 concept in January 2014.

The concept was without any specs, but it was undeniably sporty and clearly inspired by the Toyota Supra A80. It featured the same front-engined, rear-wheel-drive layout and sleek lines. However, news of the new car did not surface until 2016, when Toyota filed for a trademark on the Supra’s nameplate.

Toyota has released a teaser image of the fifth generation Supra ahead of the 2018 Geneva Motor Show. The accompanying text stated that «The modern racing concept will testify to Toyota’s commitment to bringing its most iconic sports car back to the market. »

The GR Supra Racing Concept was also unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show. Undoubtedly based on the FT-1 concept, this car was a racing version of the fifth generation Toyota Supra. It is not known which engine powered the concept, but the car featured a lowered suspension with genuine Toyota parts, BBS racing wheels, Brembo racing calipers, a stripped down interior, a roll cage, Michelin track tires and more carbon fiber.

In July 2018, Toyota officially announced that the Supra would be back in production and a near-production model (in camouflage) was unveiled at the Goodwood Festival of Speed. Toyota worked closely with BMW on the Supra project and the car is based on the Z4 platform. The

fifth-generation Toyota Supra debuted in January 2019 at the Detroit Auto Show as a 2020 model.

Toyota previously used «A90» and «A91» as codes for fifth generation promotional and marketing materials, as a reference to previous generations of the A40-A80 models. The fifth generation Supra uses naming conventions with BMW and actually uses the J29 series codewith DB model codes.

The

Supra is equipped with two engine options from BMW: a 2.0-litre turbocharged inline-four or a 3.0-litre turbocharged inline-six. The 2.0-liter engine has a variable power output of 194-258 hp, 4500 to 6500 rpm and 320-400 Nm of torque.

3.0 liter engine has a power output of 335-387 hp. from 5,000 to 6,500 rpm and 495–500 Nm of torque from 1,600 to 5,000 rpm, with power sent to the rear wheels via an 8-speed ZF 8HP automatic transmission. A manual transmission option is not currently offered.

Compare and choose an OSAGO policy online:

Go to

The 2.0 liter model can accelerate from 0–97 km/h in 5.2–6.5 seconds, and three liters up to 97 km/h in 3 .9–4.1 seconds. That’s 0.7 to 0.5 seconds faster than the turbocharged variant of the A80 Supra. The latest generation car has an electronically limited top speed of 249 km/h.
